Local authorities have a statutory duty under section 39 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 to provide a road safety service which must include measures to promote road safety through education, training and publicity.  They are also required to undertake studies into road traffic collisions and take steps to reduce and prevent them.

 

Road Safety is vital in maintaining and improving safety for all, whether it relates to the existing road network, road improvement schemes, new developments, or temporary traffic management.  As we believe that prevention is better than cure, carrying out our independent road safety audits takes account of all road users needs, this ensures that road safety is the primary consideration. 

 

New road schemes should be audited at four stages.  The first at preliminary design to reduce the risk of building in road safety issues with inherent cost implications. A second audit should be carried out at final design stage to examine in detail all aspects of the project including proposed street furniture etc. The third audit stage is carried out on the completed project.  This ensures that any changes that have been introduced to the design following the stage two audit can be thoroughly checked under operational conditions. Stage 4 audits are carried out approximately one year after scheme opening, and will be based on any collision data. During the construction work we can carry out audits of the Temporary Traffic Management Scheme.

Based on collision data, we can prepare reports that include possible remedial measures.
